LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Omaha baseball team built an early six-run lead but dropped an 8-6 decision to Kansas Wednesday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. The Mavericks are now 4-12 as they enter Summit League play this weekend, while the Jayhawks improve to 12-4.

The win on the mound went to reliever Ryan Cyr (3-1), who held the Mavericks to two hits with two strikeouts over 1.2 scoreless innings. Tommy Steier (0-1) took the loss for Omaha, surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and a walk over an inning pitched. Zack Leban earned his eighth save with a one-hit, scoreless ninth.

Tyler Daugherty (2-for-5, three RBI), Braden Rogers (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) and Max Gamm (2-for-4, one run) all finished with multi-hit performances at the plate.

Omaha's bats were alive from the start, as the Mavericks created a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Cole Thibodeau led off the game with a 3-2 walk and stole second, followed by two more walks from Grant Suponchick and Keil Krumwiede to load the bags with one out. Rogers then poked a single through the left side to score Thibodeau, and a base-clearing, three-run double to the left center gap by Daugherty pushed the lead to four.

The Mavericks chipped in another pair of runs in the second, using two hits and an error. Gamm opened the inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a Thibodeau sacrifice bunt. Thomas DeBonville then singled to short and stole second to put runners in scoring position for Krumwiede, who reached on a fielding error that allowed both runners to score for a 6-0 advantage.

KU trimmed the lead to three in the third with a three-run, four-hit frame. With runners on first and second, James Cosentino delivered an RBI single to right, and Jaxx Groshans followed with a two-run homer to left for a 6-3 tally.

The game stalled in the sixth when the Jayhawks put up three more runs with a two-run triple by Benjamin Sems and an RBI single from Rudy Karre. They broke the six-all tie in the seventh when Brendt Citta scored via a Maverick fielding miscue and a Sems sacrifice fly to take an 8-6 lead.

Omaha opens the conference slate this weekend, welcoming Fort Wayne for a three-game series March 16-18. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m. at Seymour Smith Park, and links to live audio and stats will be available on OMavs.com.
