LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Anna Edet broke a 15-year-old school record in the hammer throw on the first day of competition for the Omaha track & field team at two meets in California.
Edet threw 167-06 in the hammer at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State. The mark was three and a half feet farther than the previous record set by Ryan Hergott in 2003.
"I'm thrilled for Anna. We knew it was only a matter of time before she got the record," said head coach Chris Richardson. "It was a strong first day for the team, and we still have work to do tomorrow."
Also at Long Beach, Stephanie Ahrens finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 5-08 ¾. Ahrens holds the top high jump mark in the Summit League this season (5-09 ¾).
Sasha Quattlebaum put up a big lifetime best of 17-11 ½ in the long jump, almost 16 inches farther than her previous best.
Also in the field, Megan Adams put up the second-best javelin throw of her career, posting a mark of 121-10.
On the track, Lauren Houston ran a season-best time of 57.92 in the 400 meters.
The Mavericks also competed at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific in Azusa, Calif. On the track, Emily Johnson posted a lifetime best of 18:05.68 in the 5,000 meters.
Annie Catania also had the second-fastest time of her career in the steeplechase, running a time of 11:34.00.
The Mavericks will finish competition in day two of the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
