AZUSA, Calif. – Senior Stephanie Ahrens tied a five-year-old school record in the high jump on the second day of competition for the Omaha track & field team at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific.
Ahrens jumped 5-11 ½ on the third try at that height to take first in a group of 53 athletes. She tied the school record first set by Kathie Lee Laidley in 2013. Ahrens now owns the UNO record in the high jump both indoors and outdoors.
Her mark puts her in a tie for fifth in the NCAA and fourth in the NCAA west region.
"Steph's jump was awesome," said head coach Chris Richardson. "She and Coach (Jill) Sutton have been working hard this season, and it was bound to happen.
"We came out today and competed really well," Richardson added. "Being the second meet of the week, I was really happy how we still came out strong."
"Track & field is a demanding sport, both physically and mentally," said Ahrens. "Today, I not only jumped my personal best, but it also served as the mental motivation and affirmation that I need to finish my senior outdoor season strongly."
In other field events, Anna Edet hit a new personal best in the discus, posting a mark of 120-03.
On the track, Lauren Houston put up a personal best in the 800 meters, running a time of 2:09.73. It's the top time in the event in the Summit League so far this season.
Daylee Olson, running the 800 for the first time, ran a time of 2:24.95.
In the 100 meter hurdles, Sasha Quattlebaum put up a new personal best of 14.84.
Alexis Allgood ran a collegiate best time of 59.20 in the 400 meters.
The Mavericks will compete closer to home next week, taking part in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and the Kip Janvrin Invitational in Indianola, Iowa on Thursday-Saturday, April 26-28.
