Ahrens Takes Second in High Jump at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Stephanie Ahrens posted one of the top marks in the high jump and finished second on tiebreakers at the prestigious Drake Relays on Saturday.
Ahrens was one of three jumpers in the field of 23 who jumped 5-10 ¾, and she was awarded second place based on number of misses. Perdue's Janae Moffitt, who is ranked 10th in the country, took first, and UT Arlington's Alexus Henry, who is second in the nation, took third.
"I'm thrilled that Steph was able to comeback after tying the school record last week to perform at such a high level again," said head coach Chris Richardson. "She and Coach (Jill) Sutton have been doing a lot of great work, and we're all looking forward to seeing how Steph will compete at the Summit League Championships and the NCAA First Round in the coming weeks."
Ahrens cleared both 5-08 ½ and 5-09 ¾ on her third attempts but soared over 5-10 ¾ on her first attempt, but Moffitt cleared the same height on her first attempt to retake the lead. None of the three jumpers cleared six feet.
Ahrens tied the school record of 5-11 ½ in the event last week at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California. She owns school records in the high jump both indoors and outdoors.
Ahrens was the only Maverick to compete on Saturday. She and the rest of the team are back in action at the Nebraska Invitational on Saturday, May 5.
