Mavericks Aim For Summit Championship
May 9, 2018 | Track & Field
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team will compete in the Summit League Championship on Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12, in Tulsa, Okla.
Competition begins at 8 a.m. on Thursday with the 10,000 meter run for both men and women. Action on Friday and Saturday start at 11 a.m. from the ONEOK Sports Complex at Oral Roberts.
All eyes will be on Omaha senior Stephanie Ahrens who is the two-time defending Summit champion in the high jump. Ahrens has the top jump in the league by more than six inches. She cleared 5-11 ½ at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California on April 19 to tie the school record.
Ahrens is one of six athletes tied for 11th in the NCAA in the event.
Ahrens also will be competing in the 100 meter hurdles. She's only run the event once this year but put up a time of 14.52 which is good for eighth-best in the Summit this season. Sophomore Sasha Quattlebaum is not far back after running 14.71 at the Nebraska Invitational on May 5.
Junior Lauren Houston also has the potential to earn All-Summit honors by finishing in the top three in an event. She currently owns the third-best 800 meter time in the league at 2:09.73, a lifetime best.
Junior Anna Edet is another scoring threat for the Mavericks in the hammer throw. Edet has twice set the school record in the event his year including a toss of 176-09 at the Nebraska Invitational last Saturday, a mark that bested her previous school record by more than nine feet.
Junior Annie Catania will look to score in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The junior ran a season best time of 11:34.00 at the Bryan Clay Invitational and sits 11th in the Summit League this season.
The Mavericks were picked to finish fifth in the annual preseason coaches' poll. North Dakota State is the heavy favorite to repeat as Summit outdoor champion for the 11th straight year.
