OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women's basketball coach Brittany Lange announced the signing of Cyprus native Elena Pilakouta on Friday.
"Elena is a great addition to our roster," said Lange. "She is currently representing her country's national team. Elena gives us great size and a true presence at the center position that allows our team to play longer and bigger lineups."
Pilakouta, a 6-3 center from Nicosia, Cyprus, is a two-time Cyprus women's basketball player of the year. She comes to Omaha after years of experience playing with the Cyprus national teams in high-level international competitions.
Pilakouta represented her country on the U16 and U18 national teams. She led Cyprus to 2017 FIBA U18 Women's European Division C championship last summer, averaging 12.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest in the tournament.
She is also a four-time Cyprus national champion and a part of two Cyprus Cup championship teams.
"She has strong international basketball experiences and knows how to use her hands, size and abilities to her advantage," said Lange. "She joins a talented incoming class of post players that all bring a different skill set to impact us on both ends of the court. We are very excited to work with Elena and see her impact as a Maverick."
