Jun 7, 2018 | Track & Field
OMAHA, Neb. – Senior Stephanie Ahrens will make history on Saturday at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Lincoln native is the first Maverick to take part in the championships in the Division I era. She will compete in the high jump on Saturday, June 9 at 5 p.m. CT at Oregon's historic Hayward Field.
Ahrens earned her way to Eugene by tying for second at the NCAA West Preliminary at Sacramento State on May 24. She jumped 5-10 ¾, just three-quarters of an inch from tying her own school outdoor record in the event. Ahrens also owns the indoor high jump school record.
It has been an outstanding senior season for Ahrens. She won the Summit League indoor high jump title in February for the first time. She followed that medal with her third straight gold in the Summit outdoor high jump in May, making her the first league athlete to win the outdoor high jump in three consecutive years. She earned All-Summit League honors for both her indoor and outdoor wins.
Ahrens also recently was named to the Summit League All-Academic Team for the second straight year, and she was named UNO's Marian Ivers Female Athlete of the Year at the annual Maverick Awards Banquet in April.
The last time the Mavericks had athletes in the NCAA Championship meet was 2011, their final season of Division II competition. Heather Minssen earned All-American status for a runner-up performance in the shot put while Sami Spenner also received All-American honors for finishing fifth in the heptathlon.
The Mavericks' last outdoor national champion was UNO Hall of Famer Anja Puc who won the 800 meters at the 2010 Division II championship. Their most recent track & field national champ was Nkeiruka Domike who won the indoor triple jump in the 2011 D-II championship.
In all, nine different Mavericks have won a total of 11 track & field national championships.
