Hawks Edge Mavericks Late, 4-3

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 20 North Dakota got a goal with 1:50 left in the third period to beat the Omaha hockey team, 4-3, on Friday night in the series opener at Baxter Arena.
Jackson Keane finished off a pass from Collin Adams to complete a three-point night and dash the comeback hopes of the Mavericks who had trailed 3-1 in the game.
The loss drops the Mavericks to 6-13-1 overall and 2-8-1-0/1 in the NCHC while UND, with its third straight win, improved to 12-9-1 overall land 6-5-0-0/0 in the conference.
UND's Jasper Weatherby tipped in a pass from Keane just as a power play expired to put the Fighting Hawks up 3-1 at 3:40 of the second period.
But the Mavericks, who went 2-for-4 on the power play, drew to within one when Zach Jordan's centering pass hit Ryan Galt and bounced in past goalie Adam Scheel.
Omaha then tied the game early in the third. Tyler Weiss scooped up the puck after Dean Stewart had pinched down the wall to keep in it. Weiss fired through traffic, beating Scheel for his first collegiate goal at 5:34.
The Mavericks had a couple of good chances to tie the game late. But Scheel stopped Kevin Conley on a breakaway and then denied Mason Morelli on a point-blank chance with seven seconds remaining.
It was Omaha's third straight one-goal loss.
UND opened the scoring 2:40 into the game when defenseman Matt Kiersted beat Evan Weninger with a long wrist shot.
Omaha got the goal back on the power play. Jordan knocked in the rebound of a shot by Morelli at 4:26.
But the Fighting Hawks retook the lead when Nick Jones banged home a loose puck during a power play at 10:09.
Weninger finished with 33 saves while Scheel had 17 as UND outshot the Mavericks, 37-20.
The two teams complete the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
