Smith Denied NCAA Waiver

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's basketball program announced Friday that sophomore Marco Smith has been denied a waiver by the NCAA and will not be eligible to compete until the 2020-21 season.
Smith, a guard from Kansas City, Kan., will have two full years of eligibility remaining beginning with the start of the 2020-21 campaign after sitting out this season.
Omaha's initial waiver request on Smith's behalf was denied. UNO later filed a request for reconsideration of the waiver, which was also denied.
"We are disappointed by the decision regarding the waiver for Marco," head coach Derrin Hansen said. "I would like to thank (Associate Athletic Director) Brian Carey and his compliance staff for their diligence and support of Marco's case.
"Marco is a terrific person and student-athlete, and he will continue to develop in our program this season. We look forward to showcasing his abilities in 2020-21."
Smith transferred to Omaha in May 2019 from UMKC. He spent two seasons in Kansas City, averaging 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2017-18 before redshirting in 2018-19.
