Trio of Mavericks Named NCHC Award Finalists

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Three members of the Omaha hockey team have been named finalists for NCHC post-season awards, the conference announced today.
Senior Mason Morelli has been named one of three finalists for the Forward of the Year Award. Freshman Taylor Ward is a finalist for the Rookie of the Year Award, and senior Fredrik Olofsson is a finalist for the Senior Scholar-Athlete Award.
Morelli is having a career year for the Mavericks, leading the team in scoring with 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points while playing in all 34 games. He is currently tied with Olofsson for fifth in NCHC scoring for all games played. He's also tied for first in goals and power play goals (7).
The native of Minot, N.D. was named the NCHC Player of the Month for November after earning five goals and seven assists for 12 points in seven games, leading all conference players.
Ward is currently tied for the NCHC freshman scoring lead for all games played with eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points. In conference games only, he is tops among all first-year players with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points. He ranks second among rookies in both goals and assists.
Ward was a three-time NCHC Rookie of the Week and the NCHC Rookie of the Month for November when he compiled three goals and seven assists for 10 points in seven games.
In addition to joining Morelli in the team scoring lead, Olofsson leads the NCHC for all-games played with 18 power play points (5-13-18). He ranks eighth in NCHC conference scoring with six goals and 15 assists for 21 points.
The native of Broomfield, Colo. has reached career highs in assists (23) and points (33) this season. He is a four-time member of the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and a three-time NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete. Last year, he was one of several Omaha players named an All-American Scholar by the American Hockey Coaches Association.
The winners of all of the NCHC's year-end awards will be announced on Thursday, March 21 ahead of the 2019 NCHC Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul, Minn.
The Mavericks begin their NCHC Quarterfinal playoff series against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth on Friday, March 15 in Duluth, Minn.
