Freshman Taylor Ward was named the NCHC Rookie of the Year, the first Maverick to take home the honor in the six-year history of the conference.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Omaha freshman forward Taylor Ward has been named the NCHC Rookie of the Year, it was announced today at the NCHC Award Celebration at Xcel Energy Center.
Ward is the first Maverick to receive the conference's top rookie honor. He was named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team last week, the fourth Maverick to earn the honor in school history.
Ward is currently tied for the NCHC freshman scoring lead for all games played with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. In conference games only, he was tops among all first-year players with six goals and 13 assists for 19 points and finished in a tie for 10th among all players. He ranked second among rookies in both goals and assists.
Ward was a three-time NCHC Rookie of the Week and the NCHC Rookie of the Month for November when he compiled three goals and seven assists for 10 points in seven games.
The native of Kelowna, British Columbia is the first Omaha freshman to score 20 or more points since 2014-15 when the Mavericks had three players crack 20 led by Jake Randolph who had 26.
Ward finished the season third in team scoring.
The NCHC Frozen Faceoff is Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.
