SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Junior Emily Johnson finished fourth overall, leading the Omaha cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Augustana Twilight on Friday night at Yankton Trails Park.
Johnson picked up from where she left off last season, leading the Mavericks with a time of 17:06.31 over the 5K course. Dating back to 2018, she has led the Mavericks in seven straight meets.
"I'm very happy with our start to the season," said Cliff Cisar, head cross country coach. "It was our best team performance at this meet in the time I've been coaching here.
"Emily Johnson ran a 5k personal best, and we learned a lot about what need to work on in the coming weeks."
Heidi Hall was second on the team and 16th in the field of 306 runners with a time of 18:13.61. Ivanna Uribe was third in scoring with a time of 19:23.77, putting her 64th overall.
Anita Jenkins finished fourth for UNO and 67th overall with a time of 19:24.99. Freshman Raegan Andersen, in her first collegiate meet, ran a time of 19:38.58 to come in 84th.
Also running for the Mavericks in the season opener were Paige Blackford (19:42.75), Emily Robles (20:04.22) and Danielle Howard (20:46.28).
The Mavericks finished with 179 points. South Dakota won with a score of 40. Nebraska was second at 67, and host Augustana was third at 98.
Omaha returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Greeno/Dirksen Invite at Nebraska.
