Mavericks Sign Four For 2021
Dec 30, 2020 | Women's Golf
OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women's golf head coach Seth Porter announced today the signing of four prospective student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. All will enter the university as true freshmen in the fall of 2021.
The signing class includes two from Nebraska (Baylee Steele/North Platte; Sydney Taake/Papillion) as well as Emma Kirvan from Naperville, Ill. and Maddie Simon from Mahtomedi, Minn.
"I am very excited about our signing class," said Porter. "I believe that all four of our recruits have the ability to come in and compete for playing time immediately. Â
"In signing Baylee and Sydney, I believe that we have signed the two best high school seniors in Nebraska which is always important to us in the recruiting process."
Â
Steele was a four-year letter winner at North Platte High School. As a senior, she helped the Bulldogs to the state Class A championship while finishing in the top five overall. The state title followed two runner-up finishes for North Platte at the state tournament.
"Baylee had an unbelievable senior season," said Porter. "She set the state scoring record this fall with a score of 65. She is a hard worker on the golf course and in the classroom, but most importantly, she is a great person. We look forward to her contributions on and off the golf course at UNO."
Taake was a three-year letter winner in golf at Papillion LaVista High School. As a senior, she finished sixth overall at the state championship, her second straight year with a top-10 finish. She concluded her career as the school's record holder for lowest scoring average. She also was a three-year letter winner in swimming.
"Sydney had a very strong summer and senior year of high school," said Porter. "She is relatively new to the game, as she was a competitive swimmer, but she has made huge strides in the last couple of years. We look forward to Sydney continuing to improve and vie for playing time once she arrives on campus."
Kirvan was a three-year varsity letter winner at Naperville North High School. She was the team captain and team MVP as a senior after tying for first individually at the conference tournament. She also placed in the top-10 in both the regional and sectional tournaments and helped the Huskies to second place in the conference.
"Emma has only been playing golf for five years, but she comes with a bunch of national experience where she has seen early success," said Porter. "We look forward to watching her continue to grow as a golfer and helping her succeed off of the golf course."
Simon was a letter winner for Mahtomedi High School in a career cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a sophomore, she was an all-conference selection for the second straight season and finished 15th overall at the AAA Minnesota State Championship. That year, she helped the Zephyrs to a runner-up finish at the section championships.
"Maddie was all-conference in consecutive years in 2018-19," said Porter. "Her 2020 year was cut short due to COVID. She had many strong finishes in the summer of 2020. We are looking forward to watching her grow as a student-athlete at UNO."
The Mavericks begin the spring half of their season at the Kiawah Island Classic in South Carolina on Feb. 28-March 1.
