COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sophomore Taylor Ward has been named the Bauer NCHC Forward of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Ward led the Mavericks in scoring with three goals and two assists for five points during a split with Western Michigan last weekend.
On Friday, Ward picked up a primary assist as well as two blocked shots in a 5-2 loss to the Broncos. The next night, the native of Kelowna, British Columbia recorded his first career hat trick, including the game winning goal, and assisted on another in a 4-2 win. He finished even for the weekend and had a 60 percent shooting percentage.
The five points helped Ward tie his career best for points in a season (27). He leads the Mavericks and ranks second in the NCHC with 16 goals and is tied for third in the conference in points for all games played.
Ward's nod is the seventh weekly award earned by a Maverick this season and the third Forward of the Week award, joining Kevin Conley and Martin Sundberg.
Last season, Ward was named the NCHC's Rookie of the Week three times, the rookie of the month for November and the conference Rookie of the Year.
This week, the Mavericks will face two-time defending national champion Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8, in Duluth, Minn.
