Abate, Scanlin Named To NCHC All-Rookie Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The NCHC announced today that Omaha hockey freshmen Joey Abate and Brandon Scanlin have been named to the NCHC All-Rookie Team.
Abate finished the regular season with four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 19 conference games. That put him in a tie with three others for third in NCHC freshman scoring. The native of Bloomingdale, Ill. also is tied with teammate Ryan Brushett for third in freshman scoring for all games played with 18 points (9-9-18). He's tied with two others for fifth in team scoring and leads the Mavericks with four game-winning goals.
Scanlin appeared in all 24 NCHC games this season, earning a goal and four assists for five points to put him in a tie for second among rookie defensemen in scoring. He's part of a five-way tie for 17th in NCHC rookie scoring. The native of Hamilton, Ontario is in a five-way tie for seventh in freshman scoring for all games played with three goals and 11 assists for 14 points. He's tied for 13th in NCHC defenseman scoring for all games played. He's UNO's leading scorer among defensemen.
Abate and Scanlin are the fifth and sixth Mavericks to make the NCHC All-Rookie Team in the seven-year history of the conference. It marks the first time more than one Maverick has been named to the team in one year.
Omaha's other NCHC All-Rookie Team members include Jake Guentzel (2014), Luc Snuggerud (2015), Evan Weninger (2016) and Taylor Ward (2019). Ward also was named the NCHC Rookie of the Year last season.
The Mavericks open the NCHC Playoffs with a best-of-three quarterfinal series at third-seeded Denver on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, March 13-15.
