Mavericks Begin Indoor Season at South Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team starts its indoor season this weekend at the USD Invitational at South Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 16.
Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. from the Hillenbrand Memorial Track in Vermillion, S.D.
The Mavericks return 11 letter winners from last season's team. They'll also feature 15 newcomers including 12 true freshmen and three transfers.
Senior Scarlett Hill and sophomore Carrie Simonson are Omaha's leading returning sprinters. Hill was second on the team in the 60 meters last season with a time of 7.90 while Simonson was right behind at 7.91.
In the 200 meters, Simonson had UNO's top time at 25.34 while Hill was third at 26.10. Simonson also had the Mavericks' top mark in the long jump (17-05) last season.
Senior Jaycee Schettler is the Mavericks' leading returner in the 60 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and pentathlon, putting up their top marks in all four events.
In the distance events, sophomore Paige Blackford had Omaha's top time in the mile (5:15.95). She also is UNO's No. 2 returner in the 800 meters, just behind classmate Maya Nachtigal (2:26.09).
Following the meet at USD, the Mavericks return north for the Jim Emmerich Invitational at South Dakota State on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Brookings, S.D.
