Mavericks Tabbed Fourth In Summit League Preseason Poll

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. ā Omaha Softball was tabbed to finish fourth in the Summit League this season after the league's seven head coaches voted in the annual preseason poll, the conference office announced Tuesday morning.

The six-time defending Summit League Champions, North Dakota State, received six of the seven first place votes and were selected as the preseason favorite with 36 total points. South Dakota State tallied one first place vote and were selected second in the poll with 31 points.

South Dakota tallied 25 points in the poll and rank third, while the Mavericks earned the fourth spot with 19 points. Kansas City (16), North Dakota (12), and Western Illinois (8) round out the final three spots in the poll, respectively.

Sydney Hampton and Jamie White were named to the Summit League Players to Watch list.

Hampton made 14 starts in the circle for the Mavericks last season. Hampton finished with a 10-4 record, 4.00 ERA, and 32 strikeouts in the shortened season. She tossed the 18th no-hitter in program history since 2000 in a 9-0 five-inning win at UC Riverside. Hampton ranked 20th in the nation with three shutouts and 21st with 10 wins on the year. She finished first in the Summit League in starts (14) and shutouts (3), second in wins (10), fifth in complete games (6), seventh in opponent batting average (.267), and ninth in ERA (4.00).

White started in all 24 games for Omaha last season. She hit .317 with six doubles, eight homers, and 26 RBI. White led the Summit League and ranked 26th in the nation in homers, while also leading the league in RBI. She ranked second in the conference in runs (17) and doubles (6), third in slugging percentage (.683), and fifth in hits (26). She posted a season-high five RBI at UTEP and vs. Montana.

The Mavericks open the 2021 season this weekend at the UNI Dome Tournament. First on the slate, Omaha will take on Butler Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. followed by a pair of games Feb. 13 vs. Iowa State and UNI. The Mavs will close the action Feb. 14 with two more games vs. Drake and UNI.
