OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha men's golf team will compete for the Summit League Championship beginning Saturday, May 1, in Newton, Kan.
The 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes each day from May 1-3 at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course. Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. The league did not stage a championship in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Mavericks enter the tournament ranked eighth in team scoring with a stroke average of 304.1. They were picked to finish sixth in the annual preseason coaches' poll.
This will be the eighth event of the season for the Mavericks who last played on April 12-13, hosting the Stampede at the Creek at Indian Creek Golf Course.
Sophomore Josh Peters leads the Mavericks in scoring with a stroke average of 75.7. He has led UNO in scoring in a team-best three events this season. Classmate Josh Bartels is second on the team with a stroke average of 76.4 and has led the Mavericks in scoring in two tournaments. Â
Bartels and junior college transfer Noah Hartman have posted UNO's best 54-hole scores of the season – 219. Bartels did so at the Beu Mussatto Invitational at Western Illinois on April 4-5 while Hartman did the same at the Grand Canyon Invitational on March 15-16.
The Mavericks' best finish in the Summit League Championship came in 2015-16, their first full year of Division I eligibility, when they were runners up with a score of 889. That year, Kevin Gordon was the individual medalist with an even-par score of 216 while teammate Ben Maskus finished in a tie for second, one shot back.
