Mavericks Ready For Summit Championship

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha track & field team will compete for Summit League Outdoor Championships on Thursday-Saturday, May 13-15, at South Dakota.
The championships begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the multi-events followed by field events at 2:30 p.m. and the 10,000 meters at 7 p.m. On Friday, the multis conclude to start the day at 11 a.m. followed by field events at 4 p.m. and track events at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, field events begin at 11:30 with track events starting at 12:20, all from the Lillibridge Track Complex in Vermillion, S.D.
Junior Sheridan Rodriguez enters the championships as the Mavericks' highest ranked athlete in an event. She's part of a three-way tie for third in the high jump, having posted a season best mark of 5-07 this spring. She earned All-Summit honors during the indoor season with a second-place finish. Â
Freshman Kaitlin Hellbusch comes in eighth in the event with a lifetime best leap of 5-04 ½.
In the heptathlon, freshman Roxy Denton ranks seventh in the Summit with a score of 4,055 while classmates Kylie Johnson and Taylor Ramaekers are eighth and ninth with scores of 3,834 and 3,828 respectively. All are lifetime best scores.
Other Mavericks will head to Vermillion just on the outside of the top eight. Sophomore Carrie Simonson is tied for 13th in the league in the long jump with a lifetime best mark of 18-11 ½. She's just one and a quarter inches from cracking the top eight. Simonson will be one of the busiest Mavericks as she also is entered in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and will run in the 4x100 meter relay.
In the javelin throw, junior Lori Vedder ranks 10th in the Summit with a lifetime best throw of 130-10.
On the track, senior Scarlett Hill is 11th in the 400 meters with a lifetime best mark of 58.74, less than two seconds behind the eighth-place time. Like Simonson, Hill has a full schedule, also running in the 200 meters and both relays.
Sophomore Vanessa Gunderson is 12th in the 400 meter hurdles with a lifetime best time of 1:06.47, fewer than three seconds behind the eighth-place time.
UNO's 4x100 meter relay comes into the championship ranked fifth while its 4x400 meter relay is ranked sixth.
The Mavericks were picked to finish seventh in the Summit League preseason coaches' poll.
