The Mavericks got out front early on No. 3 Minnesota State early and never looked back. Getting goals from Sophomore forward Ty Mueller (who ended up being 1st star of the game with three points) and graduate transfer Jake Pivonka in the opening 9:04 of the game, Omaha was able to keep their foot on the gas and open the season up with a 7-2 exhibition victory.

Omaha got goals from seven different players tonight. However, it would be freshman newcomer Ray Fust who ended up being the game winning goal scorer with a quick snap shot from the right faceoff dot just 2:51 into the 2nd period to put the Mavericks up 3-0.

"It was nice to see the scoring get spread around so much," Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet said. "It was really nice for some of those guys to get that positive momentum heading into the season. It's always good when you make a nice play or have a nice goal and can build off that. Again, just really good to see so many guys contributing on the score sheet.

On a 5-minute power play, Omaha made the most of it by burying a pair of goals just 88 seconds apart. Tyler Weiss picked up right where he left on when he rifled home a snap shot perfectly into the top right corner. Junior forward Brock Bremer then put his mark on the stat sheet when he tipped in a shot from the point to extend Omaha's lead to 5-1.

In their goaltending debuts with the Mavericks, netminders Jake Kucharski and Simon Latkoczy had themselves in evening both onlky allowing one goal. Kucharski stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced while Latkoczy got in front of 20 of the 21 shots he saw tonight.

Special teams wise, Omaha had a very successful night. They went 3-for-8 on the power play while holding Minnesota State scoreless in four man advantage attempts.

The Mavericks will officially get their 2022-23 campaign underway with regular season action next weekend when they host Niagara for a weekend series at Baxter Arena.
