Townsend Inks With Women's Basketball

OMAHA, Neb. - Head women's basketball coach Carrie Banks has announced the signing of Jaylen Townsend. Townsend is a transfer out of Johnson Community College in Overland Park, Kansas where she played two seasons.
"Jaylen is coming to us after a successful JUCO career," said Banks.Ā "She brings experience, a high basketball IQ and the ability to spread the floor. I really like her efficiency and ability to impact the game in a variety of ways."
Townsend was named theĀ NJCAA DII Women's Basketball Player of the Year and World Exposure Report Second Team All-American in 2021-22. Townsend also earned Second Team DII All-Kansas JayhawkĀ Conference and All-Region VI Plains District honors.
In 2021-22, Townsend helped her team to a 22-2 record and a runner-up finish in the NJCAA tournament. She averaged 12.3 points per game, 4.1 rebounds per game, and 1.1 assists per game. Her 444 total points on the year ranked second in the conference, while her 12.3 ppg average ranked sixth. Townsend scored double-figures 31 times last season. She shot 39.2 percent from deep while finishing second in the conference with 58 three-pointers made.
In 2020-21, Townsend led the Cavaliers and was second in the conference averaging 14.8 ppg. She also grabbed 5.8 rpg and tallied 1.8 apg. Townsend ranked fifth nationally shooting 88.6 from the foul line. She ranked ninth in the conference shooting 45.5 percent from the field.
"I chose Omaha because it felt like home as soon as I stepped on campus," said Townsend. "It felt like I could be successful in the program around such an amazing group of people."
Prior to her junior college career, Townsend played for Lori Blade at Edwardsville High School in Illinois. In her senior season, Townsend averaged 13.3 ppg andĀ 5.3 rpg. She was named All-Southwestern First Team and was an honorable mention on the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 4A All-State Team.
