Swimming & Diving Wraps Day Two at Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Day two of the 2023 Swimming & Diving championships wrapped up Friday night. The Omaha men's and women's teams combined for seven top-10 finishes.

Following the second day of action, the women sit in fourth place, while the men are in fifth place.

"I was proud of the efforts our team put in today," said head coach Jessica Hessel. "Our women absolutely crushed it in the 500 free today with Hailey breaking her school record. We saw lots of lifetime bests on both the men's and women's side. To top the night off, our men set a new school record in the 200 free relay."

The night of finals began with the 500-free event. Hailey Matthews grabbed sixth place for the Mavericks with a time of 4:57.73. Carina Monroe placed right behind her in seventh, while Kadence Jeffries came in at ninth place in the B-Finals.

In the women's 200 IM, Olivia Dendinger tallied five points for the Mavericks with a 12th-place finish and time of 2:07.03. Annie Leinart was behind her in 14th earning Omaha points, too.

Caleb Miller just missed the top-10 with an 11th-place finish in the 200-IM. He swam a time of 1:50.85.

The next event was the 50-free. Payton Easley led the Omaha women with a time of 23.21 for ninth place. For the men, Owen Hoak and Elijah Clements tied 11th in the event with a time of 20.72.

The final individual event of the night was the men's one-meter dive. Omaha was led by Ian Blackstock who posted a time of 257.15 for ninth. Cort Chiodo, David Goodwin, and Wes Thompson each placed in the top-15 tallying points for the team score.

Thursday ended with the 200-free relay for both the women and men. Gracie Streblow, Hailey Matthews, Parker Hagemann, and Payton Easley took fifth for the Mavericks with a time of 1:32.85. The Maverick men also took fifth-place. Hoak, Amir Haviv, Clements, and Grant Waszak swam a time of 1:21.35.

Day three of the championships continues tomorrow in Minneapolis. Prelims are at 10 a.m. with finals at 5:30 p.m.
