No. 2 Mavericks Primed for Summit League Tournament

The No. 2 seed Omaha Mavericks enter the 2023 Summit League Softball Championship with an overall record of 29-15 after a 15-5 conference season. Last weekend in the season finale, The Mavericks clinched the No. 2 spot with a 2-1 series victory over North Dakota State.
QUICK HITS
• Omaha finished second in the Summit League for the third straight season. They have earned a first-round bye, and await the winner of the first-round matchup between No. 3 North Dakota State and No. 6 Kansas City.
• The Mavericks averaged .258 at the plate this season with an OPS of .736. They scored 192 runs on 305 hits, including 10 triples, 16 home runs, and a Summit League-leading 73 doubles. Their on-base percentage of .357 ranked second in the League.
• On the defensive side, the Mavericks committed 35 errors, the fewest by any team in the Summit League. Omaha owned the second-best fielding percentage in the League at .972.
• The circle is where the Mavericks were the most dominant this season. Omaha pitchers led the Summit League in ERA (2.00), runs (113) earned runs (88) triples (4) and home runs (15) allowed.
• At the end of the regular season, seven Mavericks were named to All-Summit League teams. Pitcher Kamryn Meyer and second baseman Lynsey Tucker were tabbed All-League First-Team members. Pitcher Sydney Nuismer, catcher Sydney Ross, and right fielder Rachel Weber earned All-League Second-Team. Shortstop Maggie O'Brien and left fielder Ava Rongisch were named All-League Honorable Mentions.
• Omaha has reached the Summit League Championship game in each of their last two seasons. They finished as runners-up in 2021 and 2022, losing to South Dakota State both times. Prior to 2021, the Mavericks had never made it to a conference final.
MAVERICKS IN THE TOURNAMENT
The 2023 season marks the third straight appearance in the Summit League Championship and second under head coach Mike Heard. Omaha has made the tournament six of its last seven seasons. The only year the Mavericks missed post season play was in 2019.
Last season, the Mavericks met the No. 1 seed South Dakota State in the championship for the second-straight season. Emerging from the elimination bracket, Omaha defeated SDSU 3-0, forcing a winner takes-all final game. The Jackrabbits were able to win game two by a score of 5-0 and advance past the Mavericks to the NCAA regionals once again.
After falling to the elimination bracket in the first round, pitching propelled the Mavericks to the final. Sydney Nuismer threw a complete game against No. 4 South Dakota, allowing no earned runs and just four hits to keep the Mavericks' season alive. Omaha advanced to play No. 3 North Dakota State, where Kamryn Meyer tossed a complete-game three-hitter that put the Mavericks in the championship for the second year in a row
