Mavericks Take on Stetson to Open First Road Trip of the Season

The Basics
The Mavericks kick off their first road trip of the season on Thursday when they head down to DeLand, Florida to face Stetson at 7 p.m. (CT).

Quick Hits
• The Mavericks hit the road after an 85-69 victory over MACU at home on opening day. This was the second ever match between the two schools, with Omaha so far taking both.
• Omaha had four players score double figures in the game, led by Tony Osburn with 16 and followed by JJ White and Grant Stubblefield with 14 each and Ja'Sean Glover with 12.
• As a team, the Mavericks were incredibly efficient all night, shooting .571 (30-for-52) from the field and .458 (11-for-24) from deep. Osburn, White, and Glover all shot over 60% from the field as well.
• A big point of emphasis in the offseason for Omaha was improving on rebounding, something that is already paying off as the Mavericks totaled 38 boards on Monday. This is more than they had in 26 out of 33 games last year.
• Newcomers Joshua Streit, Lance Waddles, Kamryn Thomas, Isaac Ondekane, Cooper Khamani, and Pablo Soumare all made their Maverick debuts in the season opener. Highlights included Streit shooting 80.0% from the field and totaling eight points, Thomas also scoring eight and leading the team with nine rebounds, and Waddles pacing Omaha with four assists.
• Omaha's bench totaled 44 points vs. 41 from the starters on Monday. Conversely, MACU's bench only scored four points.
• Sutton earned his first career Summit League Preseason honor after being named Second Team All-Preseason in October. In 2023-24, he was second on the team with 12.3 PPG (406 total) and led all Mavericks with 6.3 RPG (208 total boards).
• Lance Waddles (NDSU), Joshua Streit (NDSU), and Isaac Ondekane (Lindenwood) headline the Mavericks' top transfers this year with the trio coming to Omaha with a combined six seasons of Division I basketball under their belts. Also new this year are top JUCO transfers Kamryn Thomas (2024 NJCAA Third Team All-American), Khamani Cooper (465 points as a freshman in 2024), and Valentino Simon (965 career points from 2022-24).
• Omaha has three captains this year: Marquel Sutton, Tony Osburn, and Lance Waddles.
• Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 35-50 career record. This season marks his fourth year as a head coach and third with the Mavericks.
Scouting the Stetson Hatters
Stetson is coming off the best season in program history as the 2023-24 squad went 22-13 (its third ever 20-win season) to claim its first ever ASUN Championship Title and NCAA Tournament appearance. That said, the team comes into the year ranked eighth in the ASUN preseason coaches poll and sixth in the media poll after losing their top four scorers from last year. On opening day on Monday, the Hatters topped New College 94-75 at home.
The team's top returner, sophomore guard Tristan Gross led all Hatters on Monday with 18 points after shooting 6-for-11 with a three 3-PT FGs. Freshman guard Jamie Phillips Jr. was right behind him with 17 points and an impressive .700 FG% (7-for-10) and seven rebounds. Another freshman, Stefano Alesso, also scored in double figures and paced Stetson with a .833 FG% after shooting 5-for-6 in his collegiate debut.
Defensively, Phillips and Stefano also led the team with seven rebounds apiece, while Gross and junior Wake Forest transfer Abramo Canka each blocked two shots.
Head Coach Donnie Jones comes into his fifth season with Stetson following their historic 2023-24 season. Prior to his time with the Hatters, Jones spent six years at the helm of UCF's program, going 100-88, and three years leading Marshall, going 55-41. Prior to this he was an assistant with Florida for 11 seasons, helping guide the Gators to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and two National Championships (2006, 2007).

Last December marked the first ever meeting between the Mavericks and Hatters with Omaha claiming victory after besting Stetson 88-80 at Baxter Arena. Marquel Sutton (15) and JJ White (11) each scored in double figures and pulled down seven rebounds each in the game.
