The Mavericks finish off the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge this Saturday when they head out to California for a 3 p.m. (CT) game at Sacramento State.

• The Mavericks played one of their toughest opponents of the season on Wednesday when they began the challenge with a 76-65 loss to the 2024 Big Sky champion Montana State.
• Omaha went on a couple extended scoring runs vs. the Bobcats to keep it close for much of the game, including an 18-2 run between the 12th and 6th minutes in the first to briefly go up 27-20
• Marquel Sutton had his third 20-point game of the season (and third in the last two weeks) on Wednesday when he shot 7-for-11 (.636) overall and 8-for-10 (.800) from the line. • Sutton earned his first career Summit League Preseason honor after being named Second Team All-Preseason in October. In 2023-24, he was second on the team with 12.3 PPG (406 total) and led all Mavericks with 6.3 RPG (208 total boards).
• Lance Waddles (NDSU), Joshua Streit (NDSU), and Isaac Ondekane (Lindenwood) headline the Mavericks' top transfers this year with the trio coming to Omaha with a combined six seasons of Division I basketball under their belts. Also new this year are top JUCO transfers Kamryn Thomas (2024 NJCAA Third Team All-American), Khamani Cooper (465 points as a freshman in 2024), and Valentino Simon (965 career points from 2022-24).
• Omaha has three captains this year: Marquel Sutton, Tony Osburn, and Lance Waddles.
• Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 37-57 career record. This season marks his fourth year as a head coach and third with the Mavericks.
Scouting the Sacramento State Hornets
The Hornets currently sit in ninth place in the Big Sky at 2-6. Their only two wins this season came against Cal Maritime (106-44) on opening day and a narrow 63-61 win at Air Force last week. On Wednesday they opened the Big Sky-Summit Challenge with a 80-59 loss at Denver.
In his first season as an everyday starter, senior forward Jacob Holt is having the best year of his career as he currently leads the Hornets with 15.9 ppg (127 total) and 6.3 rpg (50 total). The 6'10" Canadian is also shooting .542 from the field and .407 from behind the arc.
Junior guard Julian Vaughns is second on the team in scoring despite splitting time off the bench and as a starter, averaging 11.4 ppg with 80 points. Also notable on the roster are sophomore guards Bailey Nunn and Emil Skytta who have combined for 51 assists in eight games.
After two seasons as Associate Head Coach, Michael Czepil is now in his first season as Interim Head Coach with the Hornets. Prior to coming to Sacramento State, the Melbourne, Australia native spent four years at UC Riverside and before that was with the U18 Australian National Team.
