Mavericks Grab PR's, Event Wins and Program Bests at Iowa State Classic
Feb 3, 2024 | Track & Field
The Mavericks had quite a day on Saturday at the Iowa State Classic. Action began in the weight throw where freshman Dannika Rees had a foot and a half PR. This marked back to back weeks of personal bests.
Later in the day, Chloe Walker got her personal best in the shot put. Across the track in the high jump, senior Kaitlin Hellbusch tied her season best of 5'3.75" to take 3rd in the competition. At the same time, Emma Klein was putting on a clinic in the triple jump. The Sophomore leaped to an indoor personal best of 38'7" which was just 1cm shy of her all-time farthest. That jump was good enough to win the event and move her into a tie for the 9th farthest jump in school history.Â
On the track, Jade Jackson started things off with a season best 60m hurdle time of 9.11. In the next event, Emma Klein sprinted to a PR time of 7.97. Ashley Ostrand was just behind in a season best time of 8.14, just .01 off her PR. Ostrand would later get an indoor 200m PR with a time of 26.75. The Mavericks weren't done in the 200m with Macy Persinger dipping below 26 for the first time with a 25.99. Freshman Avyn Urbanski finished just ahead of her with an indoor PR time of 25.98. And rounding out the 200m was Tania Gleason with a indoor personal best of 24.91 which ranks her seventh in program history.Â
As the dust settled in the sprints, the distance runners laced up their spikes. In the 800m, Lily Schwartz led the way for the Mavericks with a lifetime best of 2:19.87. Emily Treptow was just behind in a PR time of 2:20.77. In the longest event of the day, five Mavericks all came to play. In the 3000m, Sydney Beaudin crossed the finish line in a time of 11:00.43, a 21 second personal best. Emma Hain came away with a time of 10:48.58 and a 13 second PR. Lily Jackson crushed her last lap to run a 10:42.19, a 26 second PR. Lauren Metzger and Kamryn Ensley battled back and forth, pushing one another for the duration of the race. Metzger clocked 9:53.57 and landed as the 3rd fastest 3000m runner in school history. Ensley powered through the line for a 9:51.02 and the second fastest time in program history.Â
Overall the Mavericks had four all-time top 10 performances, 15 personal bests and an additional five season bests.Â
"The message today was to be present and be in the moment. If we let the outside distraction creep into our thoughts, we can't focus on what we want to accomplish," head coach Chris Richardson said. "I'd say a lot of them did just that with the performances they put out there. I'm proud of the way they competed and how our coaches got them ready."
