Mavericks Head to SDSU After Receiving Votes in Mid-Major Top 25

The Basics
Hitting the road for the final time of the regular season, the Mavericks open a three-game road trip this Thursday at 7 p.m. when they head up to Brookings, S.D. to face South Dakota State.

• Omaha closed out its penultimate homestand of the season on Saturday with an 85-74 win over North Dakota State to sweep the season series. Overall, the Mavericks went 3-0 in the homestand, sweeping the season series from Denver and North Dakota as well.
• This win was the 50th of Head Coach Chris Crutchfield's career and the 40th in his tenure in Omaha.
• For the second time this year, Omaha earned votes in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll, this time getting 41 votes and ranking 28th overall. Four teams in the Summit League are currently receiving votes in the poll, led by St Thomas with 95 and ranking 24th overall and with SDSU (34) and NDSU (11) behind the Mavericks.
• Omaha had one of its best games of the season from behind the arc vs. NDSU, shooting 15-for-28 (.536) on threes. This was the third game this year that the Mavericks made more 3-PT FGs than 2-PT FGs (15 to 14) along with their games against Lamar (12 to eight) and UNI (12 to nine).
• Accounting for five of those three-pointers was Tony Osburn, who shot 5-for-7 for a team-high 25 points. This was his second time this season making five threes and 11th time with at least three. Osburn also went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe on Saturday, increasing his FT% in league play to .895, putting him in first place in the conference.
• With 17 points on Saturday, Ja'Sean Glover officially topped 200 points in a single season for the first time in his career as he ended the night at 209. Similarly, Osburn is now just eight away from reaching 300 points in a season for the first time in his career.
• JJ White dished out 17 assists in two games last week to bring him to 314 in his career, good for 10th in program history. He also scored 13 points to move to 913 career points and has five more regular season games plus at least one conference tournament game to reach 1000.
• White is now second in the Summit League in FG% (.567) and 3-PT FG% (.483) in conference play.
• Marquel Sutton broke into the top 20 on the all-time scoring list last week after scoring 23 vs. NDSU to increase his total to 1190. He also pulled down eight rebounds to move into 15th all-time with 559.
• Sutton earned his first career Summit League Preseason honor after being named Second Team All-Preseason in October. In 2023-24, he was second on the team with 12.3 PPG (406 total) and led all Mavericks with 6.3 RPG (208 total boards).
• Lance Waddles (NDSU), Joshua Streit (NDSU), and Isaac Ondekane (Lindenwood) headline the Mavericks' top transfers this year with the trio coming to Omaha with a combined six seasons of Division I basketball under their belts. Also new this year are top JUCO transfers Kamryn Thomas (2024 NJCAA Third Team All-American), Khamani Cooper (465 points as a freshman in 2024), and Valentino Simon (965 career points from 2022-24).
• Omaha has three captains this year: Marquel Sutton, Tony Osburn, and Lance Waddles.
• Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 50-60 career record. This season marks his fourth year as a head coach and third with the Mavericks.
Scouting the South Dakota State Jackrabbits
After winning their only game last week in a 102-86 win over St. Thomas, South Dakota State currently sits in third place in the conference at 16-9 with a 7-3 league record. At home this year, the Jackrabbits are a perfect 11-0.
Three-time Summit League player of the week Oscar Cluff is still SDSU's top player, leading the team and placing in the top 10 in the league as of last Thursday in points (389), ppg (16.9), FT% (.790), and blocks (22). The Washington State transfer is also first in the conference in rebounding with a nearly 100 rebound and 5.0 rpg lead over second place with 286 total boards and 12.4 rpg. His .652 FG% is also first by a margin of almost .150. Cluff has 16 double-doubles including a 20-20 game against ORU back on January 18.
Second-year guards Joe Sayler (13.4 ppg, 309 total) and Kalen Garry (11.7 ppg, 293 total) are also in the league's top 25 in scoring. Garry is also the team's leader in assists with 67 and joins Cluff, Owen Larson (103 rebounds, 4.1 rpg) and Stoney Hadnot (96 rebounds, 3.8 rpg) in the league's top 25 in rebounding with 97 boards and 3.9 rpg.
Head Coach Eric Henderson is in his sixth year leading the Jackrabbits and ninth year overall with the program. During his head coaching tenure, SDSU has won four Regular Season Titles and two Championship Titles in 2021-22 and 2023-24.
All-Time Against South Dakota State
Omaha moved to 33-56 all-time against SDSU earlier this year after beating them 87-80 as part of the the team's nine-game winning streak. Sutton and White each made eight field goals and finished with 24 pints in the game, with the former puling down eight rebounds and the latter recording seven assists. Meanwhile, Kalen Gary paced the Jackrabbits with 27 points and four assists.
