Mavericks Begin Week at Nicholls State Before Taking on No. 3 LSU

The Mavericks (0-3) face two more 2024 NCAA Tournament teams in Louisiana this week, starting with reigning Southland champion Nicholls State (2-1) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before heading down to Baton Rouge for a three-game series against No. 3 Louisiana State (3-0) on Friday.

Around the Horn
• Omaha went 0-3 in the opening series last week at Tulane. Offensively, the team performed well in all three games, totaling 21 runs and a team AVG of .309 (34-for-110). Game one in particular saw the Mavericks record 17 hits which would have been tied for their second most in a game in all of 2024.
• Henry Zipay had an elite day at the plate in game one, posting his second career 4-for-4 day with two RBIs and two runs scored. He ended the week going 6-for-11 (.545) with a 1.279 OPS.
• Tyler Bishop also had a great series at the plate, going 6-for-14 (.429) with a team-leading five RBIs along with three RBIs.
• Among the new position players, freshman Mason Gaines made the biggest impact as he appeared in all three games, making two starts. He finished his first week with a .429 AVG and 1.171 OPS, driving in three runs and recording his first career extra base hit with a double on Saturday.
• On the pitching side of things, Brayden Curtis and CJ Hood both had a strong first couple of innings in their starts, with Curtis in particular striking out five through 2.2 scoreless.
• As for the bullpen, highlights included newcomers Nate Moquin and Tanner Hosick tossing a scoreless inning each in relief in game two, followed by fellow newcomer Cameron Teinert going 3.2 innings in relief on Sunday and not allowing a single run through the first 3.1.
• The Mavericks were picked third in the official Summit League Preseason Poll, earning one first-place vote. Cardel Dick and Brayden Curtis were both named Preseason Players to Watch as well, with Dick driving in 32 runs last year and Curtis with 9.6 K/9.
Scouting Nicholls State
Nicholls State is coming off its second straight SLC title with an undefeated run in the conference tournament last year that culminated in an NCAA Regional in which they lost to Tulane. So far this year, the Colonels won their first two games against Northern Illinois 5-3 and 10-2, before dropping the series finale 21-2 on Sunday.
Karson Irvin paced the Colonels in the opening series with five hits and a 1.083 OPS. His three RBIs were tied with Aaron Biediger for the most on the team, Fisher Ingersoll logged the only home run on the team. Meanwhile, on the mound, none of NSU's starters - Michael Lindsey, Dalton Hill, Alec Sparks - allowed more than two runs while all three had at least seven strikeouts.
Scouting No. 3 LSU
Going 42-23 last year, No. 3 LSU earned its fourth straight NCAA tournament bid and 36th overall, ultimately falling to UNC in the regional. The Tigers started off 3-0 this year against Purdue Fort Wayne, outscoring them 32-2. Before playing Omaha, they will also face Southern on Tuesday before also playing Nicholls State on Wednesday.
Ashton Larson and Daniel Dickinson each knocked a home run and drove in seven runs in the opening series last week, combining to go 9-for-15 at the plate and accounting for 20 of the team's 32 total runs. Dickinson was also named an NCBWA Preseason All-American along with fellow position players Jared Jones and Luis Hernandez.
On the pitching side, starters Kade Anderson, Anthony Eyanson, and Chase Shores all went five innings with at least six strikeouts while each earning the win. Eyanson was also an NCBWA Preseason All-American, along with reliever Gavin Guidry.
