Kammrad Finishes Third in Harlon Hill Voting
FLORENCE, ALA. -- Justin Kammrad has finished third in the final Harlon Hill Trophy voting. Will Hall, North Alabama senior quarterback, was named the 2003 winner of the award for the most outstanding NCAA II football player in the nation. The other finalist was Keith Heckendorf, senior quarterback at St. Cloud State.
Hall tallied 150 points and 22 first-place votes. Heckendorf followed with 115 points and Kammrad received 95 points and 12 first-place votes.
The trophy was presented at a banquet Friday night at the Florence Conference Center.
The award is voted on by the sports information directors at the 156 football-playing NCAA II schools in the nation. Two finalists from each of four regions advance to a national ballot. The top three vote-getters were then invited to Florence, Ala., site of the NCAA II championship game on Dec. 13.
The Council Bluffs, Iowa, native and graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Kammrad is the first UNO player to be named a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy.
Kammrad rushed for a school-record and NCAA II leading 1,866 yards this season, scoring 14 touchdowns. He was held to 77 yards while sitting out the second half of the season-opening game in August, then reeled off 10 straight 100-yard games. He ended the season with four straight games over 200 yards and in his final game he ran for 308 yards. That effort, in his final game, broke the school record for single-game rushing, 239 yards, which he had set in his first collegiate start in 2000.
Kammrad was also recently named to the American Football Coaches Association Division II All-America team.
He was the North Central Conference's most valuable offensive back and has been selected to play in the Cactus Bowl.
