Mavericks Post 27-9 Win Over Minnesota State
The Mavericks scored three major decisions in posting a 27-9 North Central Conference wrestling victory over Minnesota State, Mankato Friday night at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The win boosted No. 3 ranked UNO to 8-2 in duals on the season and 2-0 in the NCC.
UNO will host St. Cloud State in its final home appearance of the season Saturday afternoon at 3.
Patrick Allibone and Chas DeVetter got UNO off and running with major decisions in the first two matches. Allibone won his 149-pound match by a 12-2 score over Brandon Gritz and DeVetter followed with an 11-2 decision over Sam Donner at 157. J.D. Naig gave UNO an 11-0 lead with a 10-4 win over George Lynaugh at 165.
Minnesota State narrowed the gap by posting three straight decisions by Travis Krinkie, Jon Dierks and Josh Janousek, making it 11-9.
But UNO's defending national champion, heavyweight Les Sigman, registered a 16-5 major decision over Mike Engelmann, giving the Mavericks a 15-9 lead and 125-pounder Dustin Tovar won by forfeit for a 21-9 margin, all but clinching the win.
Mitch Waite and Eli Dominguez followed with wins for UNO.
Minnesota State, ranked No. 12 in NCAA II, fell to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the NCC.
