Mavs End Home Season With Win
Maverick seniors Nick Blanchard and Dan Vech, wrestling in their final home appearances, each had key wins to boost UNO to a 22-12 North Central Conference win over St. Cloud State Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse.
The No. 3 ranked Mavericks are now 9-2 in dual matches and 3-0 in the NCC before embarking on a two-match road swing this week to end the regular season. St. Cloud State fell to 1-6 and 0-3.
After the Huskies won the first two matches at 157 and 165 pounds, Blanchard defeated Sean Bere 15-9 at 174 and Vech followed with a solid 6-0 decision over Mike Gritti at 184 to tie the match at 6-6.
Mikal Peterson put SCSU in the lead again with a 3-2 decision at 197 over senior Lance Tolstedt, but the Mavs then pulled away. UNO's top-ranked heavyweight, Les Sigman, won by forfeit and 125-pound junior Dustin Tovar defeated Josh Lindquist 13-5 to put UNO on top 16-6.
After a loss at 141, the Mavs won the final two matches on decisions by Kevin Dudding and Christian Alt.
UNO will meet NCC foes Augustana Wednesday and No. 1 ranked North Dakota State on Friday.
