4 Mavericks Earn Titles in Brand Open
Four Mavericks battled their way into the winner's circle Saturday as UNO dominated the Brand Open with 15 placewinners in all. Shane Unger, Chas DeVetter, Steve Conlin and Les Sigman all won their weight classes in the tournament.
Six other Mavs finished second: Dustin Tovar, 125; Eli Dominguez, 141; Patrick Allibone, 149; J.D. Naig, 165; Nick Edmonds, 174, and Tony Lewis, heavyeweight.
Unger, a redshirt freshman from Madison, Neb., downed teammate Allibone 8-4 in the finals, going 4-0 to improve to 24-5 on the season. Allibone was 4-1 and is now 20-5.
DeVetter, a junior from Omaha, dfeated Chris Oliver of Nebraska, 9-8, and was 5-0 to up his record to 7-2.
Conlin, a sophomore from Omaha, went 4-0 and is now 17-8 after scoring a 3-1 decision in the final over teammate Edmonds, a redshirt freshman from Omaha. Edmonds is now 18-10 after going 3-1.
Sigman, the junior two-time defending national champion from Sturgis, S.D., won his sixth tournament of the year, defeating teammate Lewis with a technical fall in 3:30. Sigman, 4-0 Saturday, is now 34-3 on the year. Lewis, a freshman from Ulysses, Kan., was 3-1 and is now 13-5.
Nebraska-Kearney 133-pounder Jeff Rutledge won four matches while claiming the title with a 6-4 decision over Dana's Jimmy Rollins and was named the meet's outstanding wrestler.
Stanford's Bobby Pease won the trophy for most falls. The 157-pounder recorded five falls in a total of 13:15, with his fastest a 58-second performance. Pease was 5-2 in the meet and finished fourth.
The other Maverick placewinners included Christian Alt, 141; Mark Ludlow, 165, and Nate Oviate, 184, all third, and Mitch Waite, 133 and Marcus Hilario, 141, fourth.
The Mavericks are next in action at the NWCA National Dual Meet Tournament in Cleveland Jan. 21-22.
