Mavs Advance to Championship Match at National Dua
Cleveland, Ohio -- The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts en route to a 30-6 victory over fourth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney to advance to the championship match of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the Cleveland State University Convocation Center Saturday morning.
The Mavericks, who will be going for their first National Duals title since 1997, will meet North Central Conference rival Augustana in the championship match tonight beginning at 8:30 p.m. (eastern time). Augustana defeated Central Oklahoma, 27-12, in the tournament's other championship semifinal.
Sophomore All-American Patrick Allibone moved up a weight class to 157 pounds and responded by pinning the Lopers' Lewis Hyatt in 2:55. Freshman Shane Unger who had been battling Allibone at 149 pounds, recorded a major decision over Gabe Re, 14-4.
The Mavericks' only losses came at 125 pounds where second ranked Bryce Abbey defeated top-ranked Dustin Tovar, 5-3, and at 197 pounds where top-ranked Jeff Sylvester defeated Ben Strandberg, 6-1.
