Top-Ranked Mavs Win National Duals Title
Cleveland, Ohio -- The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team edged North Central Conference rival Augustana, 20-18, to claim the championship of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Tournament at the Cleveland State University Convocation Center Saturday night.
Each team won five bouts, but the difference came in the last match, at
heavyweight, where Augustana had to forfeit due to an injury to Cris
Bietz in Saturday morning's semifinal win over Central Oklahoma.
The dual was tied 10-10 after six matches. UNO's Steve Conlin then
recorded an 11-3 major decision over Ben Caven to put the Mavericks
ahead 14-10. Augustana's Tom Meester and Tim Boldt picked up
back-to-back major decisions at 184 and 197 pounds to give the Vikings an 18-14 lead. UNO heavyweight Les Sigman then picked up six team points with the forfeit to give the Mavericks the final two-point margin.
Besides Conlin's major decision at 174, Mitch Waite also recorded a major decision at 133. Other Maverick winners included Eli Dominguez (141) and J.D. Naig (165).
UNO, which improved to 4-0 on the season, won its first NWCA National Duals title since 1997.
