Mavericks Cruise Past Lopers, 32-4
No. 1 ranked UNO won nine of 10 matches Saturday night to record its second win of the year over No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney, 32-4, in front of 1,025 fans and a state-wide television audience at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
The Mavericks improved to 7-1 on the season in winning the first eight bouts. The Lopers fell to 13-4. UNO defeated UNK earlier this season 39-6 in the semifinal match of the national dual meet tournament.
The Mavs got a boost when No. 6 Dustin Tovar started off with a 3-2 win over No. 1 ranked Bryce Abbey at 125 pounds in the first match of the night. Tovar scored a takedown with 30 seconds left to take the lead. UNO's Mitch Waite, ranked No. 5, followed with a 6-4 decision at 133 over No. 2 ranked Adam Keiswetter.
UNK's only win was a major decision by No. 1 ranked 197-pounder Jeff Sylvester, 10-0.
The evening's most-anticipated match-up was anticlimatic as No. 1 ranked heavyweight Les Sigman scored a major decision, 10-1, over No. 2 ranked Tervel Dlagnev.
UNO's next action will be next weekend when the Mavericks wrestle at St. Cloud State on Friday and at Minnesota State on Saturday.
