Mav Offense Scores 3 TDs in Scrimmage
Redshirt freshmen shared the spotlight Saturday as the Mavericks churned out three touchdowns and a field goal while during a 53-play, 65-minute scrimmage at Caniglia Field.
Redshirt freshmen David Carey and Ricky Thompson, plus senior Jamar Day scored the touchdowns, while junior Andy Severson connected on a 42-yard field goal.
Redshirt freshman cornerback Reed Taylor, Oshkosh, Wis., also had a 21-yard kickoff return, a 39-yard punt return and intercepted senior quarterback Brian Masek's third-down pass in the end zone.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Miller drove the Mavs 37 yards in six plays, hitting Carey, a wide receiver from Lincoln, in the end zone on a nine-yard strike.
Thompson climaxed the longest drive of the day, a 6-play, 70-yard march, with a nine-yard run.
Day put together back-to-back runs of 17 yards and three to score late in the scrimmage.
Thompson was the leading rusher with 38 yards on seven carries and Day added 33 yards on eight attempts.
William Newell, a redshirt freshman from Clarksville, Tenn., was the leading receiver with two catches for 43 yards, including one gain of 32 yards.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Pat Spangler of Lincoln completed 4 of 9 passes for 58 yards.
The Mavericks will take Sunday off, then will resume workouts Monday.
