Mavs to Open 2006 Season Sept. 2
The Mavericks will open the 2006 football season at home against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Sept. 2 in a 10-game schedule announced by head coach Pat Behrns. The 10-game slate features five home games and contests against four teams who competed in the NCAA II playoffs last year.
The Mavericks have one open date - Oct. 7 - which also could be filled later, Behrns said.
After hosting the Lopers, who were 9-3 and won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title and competed in the playoffs, the Mavs will travel to national runner-up Northwest Missouri State. The other 2005 playoff teams include North Dakota, the Oct. 14 Homecoming opponent, followed by a trip to Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 21.
"It's a schedule that is probably tougher than last year," Behrns said. In 2005, UNO played the toughest schedule in NCAA Division II, with nine of 11 opponents posting winning records. In 2006, 8 of the 10 opponents had winning marks last season.
The only opponent not on last year's schedule is Western Washington, which was 4-6 in 2005. The Mavs will make their second visit to Bellingham to face the Vikings on Sept. 16. Both Western Washington and Central Washington, who will plat at UNO on Nov. 11, are affiliate members of the NCC for football, giving the Mavericks eight conference games.

Mavs' Severson Won't Return
Maverick placekicker Andy Severson, a three-year regular who has 191 career points, will not return for his senior season for personal reasons, head coach Pat Behrns said.
Severson led the Mavericks in scoring in 2005 with 60 points. He set a school record with 48 PAT conversions last season and is the career leader in PAT kicks with 131. Over his career, the former Bellevue West High School standout was 20-37 on field goals and 131-144 on PATs.
