Mavs Finish 19th, Naig 7th at Midlands Championshi

CHICAGO, Ill - The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team finished 19th at the prestigious Midlands Championships hosted at Northwestern University's Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior JD Naig (174) was the top Maverick finisher, placing seventh.
Naig, who received a first round bye on Friday, lost to Chad Beatty of Iowa, 3-2, before reeling off five-straight wins. Naig finished the tournament with a 6-2 record.
In Saturday's matches, Naig won by forfeit over Kurt Brenner of West Virginia. Brandon Brown (Independent) then earned a 3-0 decision over Naig. Naig concluded the tournament with a 3-1 decision over Iowa State's David Bertalino in the seventh-place match.
Sophomore 165-pounder Ross Taplin fell to Tim Palmer of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 6-3. Taplin finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, when they travel to Blair, Neb. for the Dana Open.
