Mavs to Compete at Dana Open
The Maverick wrestling team will travel to Blair, Neb. to compete in the Dana Open on Saturday, Jan. 6. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. at Dana's Gardner-Hawks Center

The Mavericks are ranked No. 4 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association top 20 poll released on Dec. 9. Four Mavs are ranked among the top eight in individual rankings.
Defending national champions Cody Garcia (125) and J.D. Naig (174) are both ranked No. 1. Ross Taplin (165) and Jacob Marrs (197) are both ranked second in their respective classes.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 28th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 262-101-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
The Mavericks finished 19th at the prestigious Midlands Championships hosted at Northwestern University. Senior JD Naig (174) was the top Maverick finisher, placing seventh.
Naig, who received a first round bye on Friday, lost to Chad Beatty of Iowa, 3-2, before reeling off five-straight wins. Naig finished the tournament with a 6-2 record.
In Saturday's matches, Naig won by forfeit over Kurt Brenner of West Virginia. Brandon Brown (Independent) then earned a 3-0 decision over Naig. Naig concluded the tournament with a 3-1 decision over Iowa State's David Bertalino in the seventh-place match.
Sophomore Ross Taplin (165 pounds) went 2-1 in the first day of competition advancing to the championship quarterfinals before falling into the consolation bracket. Taplin, the tournament's eighth seed, defeated Billy Gallo of Eastern Illinois in a fall (1:33 )and Jason Martin of Purdue, 7-0. In the quarterfinals, Taplin lost to Mark Perry of Iowa, 11-1. Taplin then lost to Tim Palmer of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 6-3. Taplin finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Sophomore Cody Garcia (125 pounds) pinned his first opponent, Trevor Charbonneau of Nebraska-Kearney, in 2:12, before defaulting his next two matches due to an injury.
Redshirt freshman Jacob Marrs (197 pounds) pinned Sean Evans of Harper in 4:59, before suffering a 10-2 loss to fifth-seeded Kurt Backes of Iowa State. Marrs won by forfeit over Dan Erekson of Iowa and was eliminated by a 10-5 loss to Nate Everhart of Indiana.
On Deck
The Mavericks will look to defend their title at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13-14, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. UNO has won the last two NWCA Duals.
