Five Mavs Named to Academic All-America Squad
Five Maverick wrestlers were named Academic All-Americans as selected by the National Wrestling Coaches Association today. Senior JD Naig and sophomore Ross Taplin earned first team honors while seniors Derek Keasling, Nate Oviatt, and Jay Wood were selected to the second team.
Naig, a two-time national champion and ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds, earned the honor for a second straight year. He is a pre-chiropractic major and is currently 38-7 on the season and 135-26 in his career.
Taplin, a 2006 All-American, is currently ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds. He is a communications major with a 30-9 record this season and a 68-23 career mark.
Keasling, an education major, was 15-13 this season before an injury ended his UNO career.
Oviatt, a 2006 qualifer for the NCAA Championships, is a political science major. He had 8-8 record in 2006 before a season-ending knee injury.
Wood, a senior journalism major, recorded a 15-13 mark this season and a 47-40 career record.
The Mavericks will be looking to claim their fourth-straight national championship this Friday-Saturday, Mar. 9-10 when they head to Kearney, Neb. to compete in the 2007 NCAA II National Championships at UNK's Health & Sports Center.
