KEARNEY, Neb.- Five Mavericks posted opening-round wins Friday, pushing UNO into sixth place before evening competition at the Health and Sports Center in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Sim Bribieseca, Todd Meneely, Ross Taplin, JD Naig and Austin Boehm all won their first matches, while Jeff Rau, Jacob Marrs and Tony Lewis dropped into the consolation bracket.
Bribieseca improved to 25-11 with a 6-3 win over Steven Fittery of Shippensburg at 141 pounds.
Meneely captured an overtime win, 5-3, over Matt True of Nebraska-Kearney at 149.
At 165, Ross Taplin defeated Justin Wood of Central Oklahoma, 2-1.
JD Naig scored a major decision over Matt Weingart of Chadron State, 14-1.
Freshman Austin Boehm registered a fall in just 1:31 over Pino Scavella of Gannon.
Central Oklahoma leads the team race with 14 points, followed by Minnesota State, Mankato at 11, Upper Iowa with 10.5, Indianapolis and Wisconsin-Parkside at 9 and UNO with 8.
