Mavericks Third After Opening Round
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Six of the Mavericks’ nine national qualifiers posted opening-round wins Friday, pushing UNO into third place in the team standing before the evening rounds of the NCAA Division II National Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Cody Garcia, Sim Bribieseca, Todd Meneely, Henry Wahle, Ross Taplin and Jacob Marrs all won their first-round bouts, while Mario Morgan, Aaron Denson and Tony Lewis dropped into the tournament’s consolation bracket.
Garcia improved to 22-4 on the year, needing just over a minute to pin Carson Newman’s Kody Pierson in their opening-round 125-pound bout.
Bribieseca fought his way back into his match at 141, winning a 5-3 decision in sudden victory over Newberry’s Tony Washington.
Meneely, the defending national champion at 149 made short work of his first-round opponent, Findlay's Sean Dong, scoring a fall 1:21 into the first period.
At 157 pounds UNO’s senior co-captain Henry Wahle scored an impressive 5-3 upset win over last year’s third place finisher, UNK's Joe Ellenberger.
Ross Taplin won a hard fought 4-2 decision over Ashland’s Justin Ferguson at 175.
But it was Jacob Marrs who put the exclamation point on the Mavs first-round performance. Marrs dominated his opening-round bout against Newberry's Kelly Anundson at 197, collecting a 16-0 technical fall 2:47 into the first period.
Minnesota State, Makato leads the team standings with 15.5 points, followed by Western State (15), Nebraska-Omaha (11.5), Nebraska-Kearney (11) and Adams State (10).
