Mavericks Add Petrino to Coaching Staff
OMAHA, Neb. - UNO head football coach Pat Behrns announced the addition of Jason Petrino to the Maverick coaching staff on Monday. Petrino will serve as secondary coach in the 2011 season.
Petrino, the cousin of Bobby Petrino (head coach at Arkansas) and Paul Petrino (offensive coordinator at Illinois), comes to UNO from Winona State University, where he served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2010.
Before Winona State, Petrino was the director of football operations for two years at the University of Wyoming from 2008-10. Petrino had coached safeties at Wyoming as a graduate assistant from 2003-04, helping develop NFL Draftees Derrick Martin and John Wendling. In his second season on the Cowboy staff, Petrino was part of a Wyoming team that defeated UCLA, 24-21, in the 2004 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.
In between his stints at Wyoming, Petrino was the defensive coordinator, secondary coach and speed enhancement coach at the University of Mary (N.D.) from 2005-08. In 2007, he led a Marauder defensive unit that ranked first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in total defense, pass defense, red zone defense, and ranked second in scoring and rush defense.
A native of Kalispell, Mont., Petrino began his coaching career at his alma meter, Carroll College. From 2000-02, Petrino was the defensive backs coach at Carroll, helping the Fighting Saints win the NAIA National Championship in 2002, as well as three Frontier Conference championships.
Petrino played defensive back at Carroll from 1995-99, serving as a team captain during his senior year. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Carroll in 2002 and a Masters in Business Management from the University of Mary in 2009.
Petrino married the former Heather Fries on June 30, 2006. The couple have two children, Jason Michael, born Aug. 28, 2007 and Mikaylah Ann, born July 16, 2009.
