Omaha native Cory Petermann enters his 15th season overall as a Mavericks' assistant coach in 2014-15 and ninth season since rejoining the Maverick coaching staff in 2007 after serving as the Mavericks’ pitching coach from 1996-2001. Petermann was promoted to the top assistant post in the summer of 2009 and has helped churn out a total of four All-American pitchers in his time at UNO.
Petermann played an instrumental role in the Mavericks' run to the 2001 national championship, mentoring NFCA First-Team All-American pitcher Michelle Manthei and 2000 NCC Freshman of the Year pitcher Krista Unger. The 2001 squad set school records with a staff ERA of 0.82 on the season and an opponent batting average of .167. In his 11 years of coaching pitchers at UNO, the Mavs have posted five of the 10 lowest opponent batting averages in school history.
Petermann has also played a critical role in the success of the UNO softball program during his second stint with the Mavericks since returning in 2007. He helped the Mavs win the MIAA regular season and conference tournament titles in 2011 with a conference-low staff ERA of 1.35 and the second-best strikeout per game ratio in school history of 6.71. In his 14 years as an assistant, the Mavs have gone 597-192 (.757).
An excellent teacher of the game, Petermann continues to be instrumental in the development and success of the Maverick pitching staff. In 2011, two of Petermann's pitchers earned All-American honors, as senior Lindsey Slocum was named an NFCA First-Team All-American for the second time in her career, while senior Beth Haley earned a second-team nod. Haley earned MIAA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2010 and 2011 under Petermann's tutelage. In 2014, senior ace Dana Elsasser was named first-team All-Summit League following her outstanding career.
Petermann is a graduate of Omaha Northwest High School. He currently is one of Omaha’s premier pitchers in the Omaha Softball Association’s men’s fastpitch league. Petermann has pitched in numerous national championship tournaments and has more than 30 years of experience playing and coaching softball.
Petermann is currently an undergraduate student at Nebraska Omaha, pursuing his bachelor’s degree in education and coaching. He lives in Omaha with his wife, Sally, and they have two sons, Joshua and Zachary.
