Mavs Score Six Against Huskies

OMAHA, Neb.- Senior Stephanie Kirby scored twice Sunday, capping a seven point weekend, and freshman Whitney Frantzen scored her college first as the No. 11 Mavs defeated St. Cloud State 6-1 at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. Junior Molly Herzberg added a goal and an assist as the Mavs improved to 12-1-1 and 3-1 in the North Central Conference. St. Cloud dropped to 6-6-2 (1-2-1 NCC).
Kirby's first goal came at the 9:13 mark on passes from Herzberg and junior Jaime Venhaus. Just 40 seconds later SCSU's Heidi Westrum took a midfield pass from Savannah Swanson and beat Maverick sophomore goalkeeper Amy Price to tie the score.
The Mavs scored three more times in the first period and outshot the Huskies 12-5. Junior Ashley Grace got the game-winner when SCSU's keeper Stephanie Brenda bobbled her shot and she knocked it in from ten yards out. Kirby then scored her second of the afternoon, and her team-leading ninth, and was followed by Herzberg's fourth of the season with a minute remaining in the half.
Twenty minutes into the second junior Brytten Kraft scored unassisted and Frantzen closed out the scoring when she hit the back of the net from 15 yards out on a pass from junior Anne Willrett.
The Maverick defense, without junior Rachel Tushner, held SCSU to ten shots, six on goal, and Price made five saves for her 11th win. Tushner was scratched from this weekend's lineup after a late-week injury and was replaced by freshman Megan Herzberg. The Mavs have given up six goals in the last three games Tushner missed.
NCC play continues for UNO next Friday when Augustana comes to town for a 4 p.m. matchup. Sunday the Mavs travel to South Dakota State for a 1 p.m. match.
