Mavs Rally to Clip Winona State, 71-66

WINONA, MINN. -- The Mavericks came from nine points down with five minutes to play Saturday night to defeat Winona State 71-66 in the regular season opener for both teams. Senior forward Tola Dada scored five of his team-leading 13 points in the final two minutes to spark a 16-0 Maverick run.
Sophomore forward Ryan Curtis added 11 points and Ty Graham and Randy Bland scored 10 points each for UNO. Curtis also led both teams with eight rebounds.
Winona State pulled away from a 28-all halftime tie behind forward Travis Leech, who scored nine of his game-high 17 points during the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Warriors led all the way after the break except for three brief ties in building a 60-51 edge with 5:12 to play on a layup by John Hopf.
Junior guard Arthur Boults started the Maverick comeback with a jumper with 4:16 left and 26 seconds later Andre Tarpley connected on a three-pointer. Tarpley then stole the ball and scored seconds later to pull UNO within three.
Senior forward C.J. Martin followed with a layup with 3:11 left to trim the margin to a point and Dada tied the game with a free shot with 1:59 left, then rebounded a miss and made the layup to give UNO its first lead since late in the first half, 62-60.
Graham followed with a three-pointer, then made two free throws to give UNO a 67-60 lead with 47 seconds left to cap the 16-point run. After Leech ended the Warriors' 4:33 scoring drought, Dada knocked down two more free shots with 31 seconds remaining.
Winona State pulled back to within three on field goals by David Zellman with 25 seconds left and Hopf with three seconds remaining, but sophomore guard Zac Robinson sealed the victory by hitting twice from the line with two seconds left.
The Mavericks, helped by 56.3 percent shooting the second half, outshot Winona State 47.3 percent to 41.1 percent from the field and forced 22 turnovers.
UNO trailed by as many as seven points the first half, 18-11, but battled back as Dada hit a pair of layups and Curtis followed with his own 7-0 run that gave UNO a 22-20 lead. Junior forward Randy Bland tied the game at 28 just before the half with a pair of free throws.
The Mavericks' next action will come this weekend when they play in the Colorado Mines Tournament. UNO meets Mesa State at 7 p.m. CST Friday night and host Colorado Mines at 9 CST Saturday night.
