Nov 16, 2003 | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb.- Junior Ashley Grace's two second half goals were the difference Sunday as the Mavs defeated Minnesota State, Mankato 3-2 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight year. The Mavs will host Northern Kentucky next Saturday with the game tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m.
The UNO Mavs (16-3-2) took a 1-0 lead into halftime after junior Brytten Kraft punched in a deflected ball in the MSU box. Seven minutes into the second Grace connected on a Haley Fries pass to give UNO a two goal cushion.
The MSU Mavs answered with their first when Amber Dusosky scored her 18th of the year on a pass from Natelie Coleman. Grace answered that five minutes later when she connected ten yards out. Freshman Megan Herzberg and senior Jessica Dotson assisted on the goal, Grace's 15th of the year. She leads the team with 38 points.
Minnesota State kept the game close when Danni Klinsing scored on a pass from Nikki Kiley, but UNO held on to win for the second time this year by just a goal over MSU.
The Mavs will rematch with NKU next weekend, but this time will host the Norse after winning 1-0 last year in Kentucky. Northern Kentucky defeated Grand Valley State 4-3 in the Great Lakes Region tournament final.
