Mavs Fall in Overtime to North Dakota
Nov 7, 2003 | Women's Soccer
MANKATO, Minn.- The 15th-ranked Mavs fell 2-1 in overtime to North Dakota in the semifinal of the North Central Conference tournament Friday afternoon, losing their first NCC post season game and a chance to win their fourth-straight title. The loss sends the Mavs (14-3-2) home to await Monday's announcement of next weekend's four-team NCAA Central Region tournament and opens the door for UND or Minnesota State, Mankato to take the NCC crown, won all three years by UNO.
UNO struck first against the Fighting Sioux when senior Stephanie Kirby took a pass from Ashley Grace and netted it 13 minutes in. NCC leading scorer Stephanie Pfeiffer tied it at one early in the second half and the score stayed that way through regulation.
Just 1:10 into overtime Pfeiffer struck again with her 21st of the year on a breakaway to send the fighting Sioux to their first NCC championship match. The Mavs outshot UND 20-7 but fell to 0-1-2 all-time in overtime games with all three decisions coming this year.
The Mavs have lost two straight, something they have not done since the 2000 season, and have lost both contests with UND this year. In the last four games they have only scored three goals.
With the loss, UNO's post-season fate is unknown. The Mavs were first in the latest NCAA regional poll, followed, in order, by Truman State, MSU and UND. Truman will face 3-12-4 Missouri Southern Saturday for a chance to wrap up its regular season at 18-1-1. The Mavs hold a slight edge over the Bulldogs with a 2-0 win earlier in the year but will await until Monday's 4 p.m. announcement to find out where they will go.
