Mavs Finish Successful Season as National Semifina

Another successful Maverick season ended just short of the national title after Kennesaw State topped the Mavs 1-0 in the NCAA Division II semifinals last Thursday. Maverick seniors Heidi Bargmann, Jessica Dotson and Stephanie Kirby ended their careers with two final four appearances and three North Central Conference championships. In their four years they compiled a 71-15-2 record and lost just twice at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben.
UNO (17-4-2) was sent home last weekend with a third-place trophy and without high scoring forward Haley Fries. The freshman suffered a broken leg in the semifinals as the Mavs attempted to come back from a one goal deficit. She had surgery over the weekend and is expected to fly home Monday.
The Mavs ended the season with 13 shutouts and a 4-2-1 record against ranked opponents. Kirby and sophomore Becca Fritz claimed All-American and all-North Central Conference honors for the Mavs.
Grace ends season as top scorer
Junior Ashley Grace will be the top returning scorer for the Mavs next year with 38 points (15 goals, 8 assists). She leads the team in the points, goals, assists and game-winning goals (6) categories. Senior Stephanie Kirby finished second on the team in scoring with 27 points (10 goals, 7 assists) and freshman Haley Fries follows with 25 (10 goals, 5 assists).
Home sweet home
The Mavs haven't lost a game at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben since Northern Colorado topped them on Oct. 13, 2001. Overall, the Mavs are 43-3-1 at home and will bring a 26 game home unbeaten streak into next year.
Perhaps the Mavs owe part of their success to the fans. Once again the Mavs lead the NCC with an average of 320 fans per game. Last year the Mavs were seventh in the nation, averaging 319 per game.
UNO played in its final home match of the year last Saturday against Northern Kentucky. With 11 home dates this year, the Mavs let in 3521 fans and set the season record with 481 at the Central Region final against Minnesota State.
Two Mavs gain All-American status
Senior Stephanie Kirby became a two-time All-American last week. Joining her was first-time honoree Becca Fritz, a second team member and a sophomore defender for the Mavericks. The two were recognized at the Division II women's and men's final four banquet.
Kirby, a member of the first group of Maverick All-Americans last year and a four-time all-North Central Conference selection, has started in all 23 Maverick games this year, gathering 27 points (10 goals, 7 assists). She has 84 points in her four years and her 34 career assists are a UNO record. Fritz, starting in 22 games, has helped the Mavs to 13 shutouts. She and the rest of the Maverick defense have kept opponents to an average of just 5 shots on goal per game. Fritz was also the only Mav named to the NCAA all-tournament team.
Kirby's career ends with honors
Senior Stephanie Kirby may want to invest in a trophy case. Along with her third-place trophy from this year and second-place one from last year, Kirby has piled up two All-American awards, four all-NCC awards and numerous academic awards, including a Cosida Academic All-American honor this year and three all-conference honors, in her college career.
