
Mavs Host UMD Then Head to WSC

UNO will enter the regular season ranked second nationally and as the pre-season favorite to win the North Central Conference. All-Americans Stephanie Kirby and Amy Price will lead the Mavs Friday evening at 5 when they host Minnesota-Duluth, then Saturday afternoon at 1 at Wayne State. UNO finished the pre-season at 1-2 with a win over Bellevue and losses to the Canadian Under-17 National Team and Creighton.
About UMD and WSC
Minnesota-Duluth shared the top spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's pre-season poll with Winona State. The Bulldogs finished 15-5-2 (8-1-0 NSIC) last year and return 10 starters from last year's squad. Senior Nicole Fietz was voted the NSIC pre-season offensive MVP after scoring 10 conference goals and assists. Wayne State finished at 7-13 (5-4 NSIC) last year under first year coach Rollie Bulluck.
The Mavs topped the Bulldogs and the Wildcats 3-0 last year in two of their 16 shutouts. UNO and UMD are tied at 1-1 in the series record and the Mavs have a 3-0 record against the Wildcats.
Mavs claim top spot in NCC coaches poll
After sweeping through the conference schedule and winning their third-straight NCC tournament, UNO was picked as the pre-season favorite in this year's coaches poll. The Mavs received 62 points and 7 first place votes. Minnesota-State, Mankato followed with 51 points and North Dakota gathered 42 and the remaining first place vote.
Wrapping-up the pre-season
UNO opened the pre-season just two days into practice against the Canadian Under-17 National Team. Junior Brytten Kraft scored in the second minute on a pass from Christen Boeckel to give the Mavs the early lead, but Canada went on to score six unanswered goals for the 6-1 win. Last Saturday the Mavs defeated Bellevue 3-1. Freshman Haley Fries scored the first two Maverick goals and senior Heidi Bargmann scored the last one. Junior Molly Herzberg and senior Stephanie Kirby each tallied an assist in the contest. The following day Creighton hosted the Mavs and shut them out 3-0.
